Forces were pulling me towards this, forces I couldn’t quite articulate even if it’s my job to articulate. So was quitting my job a difficult decision? It should have been, but it wasn’t. If you, unprompted, upended your life with a considered choice, it was probably for a good reason. My belief is that the big changes you opt for under your own volition tend to work out better than the reactive ones. Maybe, maybe, maybe, but I didn’t want to wait. Maybe I was about to financially ruin myself. The media industry is unstable, we are in financially turbulent times and The Athletic had treated me well. This was, on its face, an idiotic decision. I quit my job at The Athletic, despite the years left on my contract, and leapt. A year ago, I launched this experimental site, not quite knowing what it would be but sensing it had a place in the media ecosystem. I don’t want to get too self-indulgently nostalgic about August 23rd, 2021, but some reflection is probably in order. As of today, Year 1 for House of Strauss is in the books.

I know that before it was published as free-standing novel, Gateway was serialized. Lavarovna and finally seeing something of a worthwhile future before him. The passage seemed as if it had been cut from a magazine or something printed on similar paper, and it told briefly of Robinette meeting up with S. However, another short chapter (one narrow column of small print) was taped into the back of the book. The regular printed text ended with Robinette Broadhead finishing his last appointment with his computer psychoanalyst Sigfrid. When I checked Gateway by Frederik Pohl out of the library (it having been recommended to me by a librarian, based on the fact that my favorite book up to that time was Watership Down), I discovered something rather unusual about the text. Then I was talking with my romance book club about fun books and Penny popped up in the conversation and I knew it was time to make time for her! Neanderthal Seeks Human was a JOY to read! What I Liked: I’ve had my eye on Penny Reid’s books for quite some time now, but I kept not reading them! There was never a big reason why, there were just always other books to read instead. Published by Cipher-Naught on July 1, 2019 One of the interesting things about this book is the way in which seemingly minor characters can end up playing a larger role. Do you think their suspicions of her are based on superficial factors like her lack of wealth, or do they sense something about her that doesn't add up?ĥ. Amber gets a cold reception from the other women on Daphne's charity board. In what ways is Amber right about this, and what are some of the residents of Bishops Harbor lacking? With a widening gap between the haves and have-nots, is it fair to feel a sense of anger at the top 1%?Ĥ. Liv Constantine has set this novel in a very wealthy town, one in which the characters seem to Amber to have everything. What makes it so fun to read about an antiheroine or antihero? Did you find yourself rooting for Amber as she planned to take down Daphne?ģ. Have you ever experienced this in your life where you've misjudged a person based on appearances?Ģ. A major theme in the book is the idea that things are rarely what they seem on the outside. Modernist writers, including James Joyce and T.S. Smoke holds life culpable for the inexplicable, and Barnes's plots force us to recognize the rules (and roles) that limit a person's potential.Īlthough Barnes was heralded in her time, her reputation has suffered a cruel trick of fate. First published in newspapers in the 1910s, Smoke's playful slice-of-life stories retaliate against life's sudden shifts through a frank voice disguising irony and formal play. Barnes learned as much during a childhood of emotional and sexual abuse, and she visits this disillusionment upon her characters in a rollicking mix of suspense and humor and plot twists, while extracting material from her life in bohemian Greenwich Village. In Djuna Barnes’s posthumously collected Smoke and Other Early Stories, the world never stops playing its malevolent tricks.
